Why the Phoenix Mercury Lost Their Season Series Against the Dallas Wings
The Phoenix Mercury, a powerhouse in the WNBA, made it to the 2021 Finals, showcasing their prowess with a 19-13 record. They defeated the New York Liberty, Seattle Storm, and Las Vegas Aces to secure their spot. However, their journey wasn't without challenges, especially when they faced the Chicago Sky in the Finals, ultimately falling short.
The regular season saw the Mercury win some series, notably sweeping the Chicago Sky before the Finals. Yet, they also faced setbacks, including a sweep by the Connecticut Sun and a loss to a Western Conference rival, the Dallas Wings, who emerged victorious with a 2-1 score.
The season series with the Dallas Wings began with a Commissioner's Cup game, where the Mercury, playing away, secured a hard-fought 89-85 win. Brittney Griner shone brightly, achieving a double-double with 27 points and 16 rebounds, along with four assists and a block. Skylar Diggins and Kia Nurse also contributed significantly, each scoring 21 points, with Diggins adding seven assists, six rebounds, and a block, and Nurse contributing three assists and two rebounds. These three players were the only Mercury players to score in double figures.
The second game saw the Dallas Wings emerge victorious, with a score of 85-81. Griner once again led the way, matching her performance from the first game with 27 points, 16 rebounds, four assists, two blocks, and a steal. Diggins followed closely behind with 22 points, six rebounds, five assists, and a block. Megan Walker contributed 10 points, three assists, two rebounds, and two blocks. The Wings were led by Arike Ogunbowale, who scored 22 points and grabbed two rebounds. Satou Sabally, a future Mercury player, was also among the double-figure scorers.
The Dallas Wings continued their winning streak, securing a 77-59 victory in the third game. Griner once again took the lead, scoring 19 points. Diggins and Nurse also contributed, with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Despite the loss, the Mercury's performance showcased their resilience and determination, even without the injured Diana Taurasi.
