Boxing Drama: Court Blocks Fighter's Dream Match!
In a shocking turn of events, boxing sensation Vergil Ortiz's highly anticipated bout against Jaron Ennis is now in jeopardy. The reason? His own promoter, Oscar de la Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions, has legally blocked the fight. But here's where it gets controversial: it's due to a lawsuit Ortiz himself filed against them!
Back in January, Ortiz initiated legal action to sever ties with Golden Boy, claiming he had the right to do so after their distribution deal with DAZN expired on December 31. However, Golden Boy argued that their relationship with DAZN remained active, citing events aired in January and scheduled for March as proof.
Ortiz, eager to move forward, was negotiating a multi-fight deal with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing, which included a spring showdown with Ennis. But Golden Boy's legal maneuvers halted these plans, securing a temporary restraining order (TRO) that prevented Ortiz from discussing deals with other promoters.
The case took a pivotal turn on February 20, when Judge Cristina D. Silva presided over a hearing to determine the next steps. Ortiz's team argued for his right to continue his career, while Golden Boy pushed for arbitration. And this is the part most people miss: the TRO expired, but a fresh injunction kept Ortiz from negotiating elsewhere.
Judge Silva ultimately ruled that the dispute would head to arbitration, leaving Ortiz's future in limbo. The judge's decision stated, "Ortiz may not negotiate or contract with third parties for future fights before the arbitrator addresses the dispute." This means the eagerly awaited Ortiz-Ennis matchup is now highly unlikely.
With the legal battle set to continue, the boxing world is left wondering: will Ortiz ever get his chance to face Ennis in the ring? What do you think? Is this a fair outcome, or should Ortiz be free to pursue his career independently? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
