Imagine stumbling upon a scene straight out of a horror movie: a car filled with human skulls and bones, parked near an abandoned cemetery. This chilling discovery led police to a macabre hoard of mummified body parts, sparking a shocking investigation into one of the most bizarre grave robbery cases in recent history. But here's where it gets even more disturbing—authorities believe the man behind this gruesome collection stole the remains of nearly 100 individuals, turning his home into a makeshift ossuary.
The story began on a Tuesday night when officers arrested Jonathan Christ Gerlach, 34, after a months-long probe into a series of break-ins at Mount Moriah Cemetery in Philadelphia. Since early November, at least 26 mausoleums and vaults had been forcibly opened, their contents desecrated. What police found in Gerlach’s Ephrata home and storage unit was nothing short of horrifying: over 100 human skulls, long bones, mummified hands and feet, two decomposing torsos, and other skeletal remains. And this is the part most people miss—some of the remains were even pieced together or hung up, as if on display.
Delaware County District Attorney Tanner Rouse described the scene as surreal, with body parts in various states of preservation. Some were neatly arranged on shelves, while others were left in disarray. Even more unsettling, jewelry believed to belong to the deceased and a pacemaker still attached to one set of remains were recovered. Most of the items were found in Gerlach’s basement, turning a typical household space into a chamber of horrors.
Mount Moriah Cemetery, established in 1855, is no ordinary burial ground. It’s the largest abandoned cemetery in the U.S., spanning 160 acres and housing an estimated 150,000 graves. Gerlach allegedly targeted older mausoleums and vaults, smashing through stonework to access the remains inside. His arrest came after an investigator traced his vehicle to repeated visits near the cemetery during the burglary period. When apprehended, he was carrying a crowbar and a burlap bag containing the mummified remains of two small children, three skulls, and other bones.
Gerlach admitted to stealing about 30 sets of remains and even showed investigators the graves he had plundered. But the motive behind this macabre collection remains a mystery. Here’s the controversial question: Was this the work of a disturbed individual, or could there be a darker, more organized purpose behind these thefts? District Attorney Rouse admitted, ‘Given the enormity of what we are looking at and the sheer, utter lack of reasonable explanation, it’s difficult to say right now exactly what took place.’
Gerlach now faces 100 counts each of abuse of a corpse and receiving stolen property, along with multiple charges of desecration, burglary, trespassing, and theft.
