Toddler Etta's Inspiring Journey: Second Life-Changing Transplant | TTC21B Awareness (2026)

Imagine a tiny warrior, barely old enough to understand the world, facing a second life-altering medical procedure. This is the reality for three-year-old Etta Cartmill, a little girl from Newry, whose story is a testament to resilience and the unwavering love of family. Etta, along with her older brother Olly, is battling an incredibly rare genetic condition that has already demanded immense strength and courage.

Etta and Olly both suffer from a condition known as TTC21B, so rare it lacks a common name. This condition has led to kidney failure for both children, forcing them to spend much of their young lives in and out of hospitals. Olly underwent a kidney transplant in 2023, receiving a life-saving donation from his grandmother, Michelle. Etta has already received a life-changing liver transplant.

But here's where the story takes another turn: Etta is now preparing for a second major transplant—a kidney transplant. Her mother, Dionne, has stepped up, offering to donate one of her own kidneys. Dionne expressed her excitement and anticipation, stating, "I'm a match and I'm fit and healthy so I'm absolutely delighted. I can't wait to do it."

The family's journey has been filled with challenges. Before her liver transplant, Etta was often in pain and miserable, struggling with constant discomfort. Dionne shared how difficult it was to soothe her daughter, describing how Etta would become agitated, not even knowing what she wanted. Since the liver transplant, however, Etta has begun to thrive, with her personality shining through.

The family's commitment extends beyond the immediate medical needs. Dionne and Neil have been traveling from Bessbrook, County Armagh, to Belfast up to five times a week for dialysis, along with trips to Birmingham for specialist care.

Olly's kidney transplant has also brought about a remarkable transformation. His mother shared that he has "turned into the wee boy that he always should have been," full of energy and ideas.

And this is the part most people miss... The Cartmill family's story is a powerful reminder of the profound impact of organ donation and the extraordinary strength of the human spirit. It is a story of hope, resilience, and the enduring bond between a mother and her child.

What do you think about the Cartmill family's story? Do you find it inspiring? How do you feel about the sacrifices made by the family members? Share your thoughts in the comments!
