Tanzania's Fuel Security Project: Minister Mbarawa's Push for Progress (2025)

Mbarawa Directs TPA to Intensify Fuel Project Oversight

DAR ES SALAAM: In a move to bolster Tanzania's fuel security and reduce operational costs, Minister for Transport, Professor Makame Mbarawa, has urged the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) to step up its technical supervision and on-site oversight of a major fuel storage project. The project involves the construction of 15 large-capacity fuel storage tanks, with a government investment of 703 billion shillings.

Once completed, the project will provide a substantial storage capacity of 380,000 cubic meters, ensuring Tanzania maintains adequate fuel reserves within its borders. Professor Mbarawa emphasized that this investment will not only secure a stable fuel supply but also ease the burden on the country's residents by reducing fuel-related expenses and improving port efficiency.

During an inspection tour of the Kigamboni fuel storage facility in Dar es Salaam, where construction has reached 33.5 percent completion, Professor Mbarawa highlighted the project's potential impact. He noted that the project will cut the time needed to offload fuel from seven days to fewer than four, thereby improving port efficiency. The minister also pointed out that the project will address the issue of vessels waiting offshore for extended periods, which incurs financial losses for fuel suppliers and ultimately affects consumers.

The project, which began in August last year, is scheduled for completion in August next year. It involves the construction of six diesel tanks, five petrol tanks, three jet fuel tanks, and one transfer line connecting different storage points. Professor Mbarawa praised President Samia Suluhu Hassan for prioritizing major development projects aimed at stimulating economic growth and lowering the cost of living.

Dr Baraka Mdima, TPA's Deputy Director-General, assured the minister that the project is progressing well and that the teams are on track to complete the remaining phases within the contractual timeline.
