Later, a different young hero, Jon Kent, briefly took up the mantle alongside his father, continuing the legacy. But the one who truly defines the modern image of Superboy emerged in the 1990s—a character personally endorsed by Superman himself, who would go on to shape the role for decades. This newer version of Superboy appeared confident, almost reckless, appearing to handle everything effortlessly—but his journey was far more complex and darker than most realized.
One pivotal storyline is the crossover event called "The Insiders," which spanned Teen Titans (Vol. 3) #24-26 and Outsiders (Vol. 3) #24-25. This saga revealed how two superhero teams, both forged through loss and hardship, were shattered by manipulations from DC's most iconic villains. Tragedy at Graduation: The Case of Young Justice

Driven by this knowledge, Superboy confided in Robin, and together they began to investigate Luthor’s claims in secret.
But Luthor was cunning. He exploited their confusion by sending a coded transmission, which, once deciphered, turned Superboy into an unwitting pawn under Luthor’s control. This transformation infused him with new, dangerous Kryptonian abilities—most notably heat vision—while also commanding him to attack his teammates with brutal intent. He attacked William “Robin” Drake, breaking his arm, and viciously assaulted Cassie Sandsmark (Wonder Girl), with whom he shared a budding romantic connection.
Simultaneously, Indigo, revealed as Brainiac 8 from the future, turned against her allies in the Outsiders and attacked Shift, her romantic partner. Under the influence of their villainous puppeteers—Luthor working through Superboy, and Brainiac 8 through Indigo—they became enemies of their former friends, aiming to fulfill malicious plans crafted by Luthor and Brainiac.
This violent confrontation left many scars. Despite moments of hope—like Wonder Girl and Shift breaking through Indigo’s control—damage was already inflicted. Indigo ultimately sacrificed herself to prevent further harm, and Shift chose to die as a human, transforming into organic material in his partner’s arms.
