In a groundbreaking move for the solar energy sector, SunPower Inc., a prominent name in solar technology, services, and installations, has introduced its latest innovation: the "Monolith" solar panel. This unveiling marks the first product resulting from their Joint Development Agreement (JDA) with REC Group, a globally esteemed manufacturer of solar panels specifically tailored for the U.S. residential market. The focus of this collaboration is on engineering and commercializing high-wattage, frameless bifacial solar panels, which are designed for both residential and light commercial uses.
SunPower’s Chairman and CEO, T.J. Rodgers, emphasized the company’s rich history of innovation in the solar industry. Since its inception in 1985, SunPower has consistently led advancements in solar cell and panel technology. He remarked, "By the time we went public in 2005, SunPower had already established itself by creating the most advanced solar panels in the industry, produced on fully automated production lines. Our collaboration with REC adds another layer to this legacy, as they are recognized as the current volume leader in the U.S. residential solar panel sector, renowned for their durability and high-quality standards."
The Monolith, the inaugural product from this partnership, is an all-black solar panel that weighs 50 pounds—this is the maximum allowable weight for a single worker under OSHA regulations in the U.S. Despite this manageable weight, it impressively generates 470 watts of power under standard testing conditions. SunPower holds exclusive rights to the REC Alpha Pure-TX 470W panel, which is currently in production. Furthermore, the company aims to create a bifacial version of the panel, which can harness sunlight from both sides. This innovative technology was previously demonstrated during NASA’s Helios solar-powered aircraft project back in 2001 and is anticipated to boost the output beyond 500 watts.
Cary Hayes, President of REC Americas, shared his excitement about the collaboration, stating, "Partnering with SunPower, a respected name in renewable energy known for its commitment to innovation and quality, allows us to further enhance our state-of-the-art bifacial panel technology." Surinder S. Bedi, SunPower’s Executive Vice President of Quality, Engineering, and Customer Success, added that both the new 470-watt model and the upcoming bifacial panel, expected to exceed 500 watts, are crafted to ensure superior system performance. These innovations aim to maximize long-term energy production, even in challenging environmental conditions. Bedi highlighted that this technological leap not only lowers the cost per kilowatt-hour of energy but also delivers remarkable value to system owners, many of whom are investment firms focused on maximizing return on their investments.
Rodgers concluded with a poignant reminder, stating, "As American households grapple with escalating utility bills, both SunPower and REC remain steadfast in our dedication to provide the most advanced solar panel technologies and comprehensive solar solutions to address our customers’ evolving energy requirements."
