The Buffalo Sabres have a new mission: to build a championship-winning team, and they're not settling for anything less. Jarmo Kekalainen, the newly appointed General Manager, has made his intentions clear.
"Making the playoffs is a great achievement, but it's not our ultimate goal. We're here to win the Stanley Cup, and that's what we're striving for," Kekalainen boldly stated.
But here's where it gets controversial... The Sabres have been in a playoff drought since 2011, the longest in NHL history. Despite coming close in recent seasons, they've always fallen short. With the appointment of Kekalainen, a former GM of the Columbus Blue Jackets, the team hopes to turn things around.
And this is the part most people miss... The Sabres have a talented core, including captain Rasmus Dahlin and center Tage Thompson, who have endured the drought the longest. Kekalainen believes they have the pieces to succeed, but it's about taking that next step.
"We're close, but we can't rush it. I believe we can make the playoffs this season, and that's our immediate focus. But our ultimate goal is the Cup," he emphasized.
The Sabres' first game under Kekalainen's leadership will be against the Philadelphia Flyers, and the new GM has high hopes for the team's future.
"We need to build on our character, consistency, and competitiveness. We can't accept losing to teams with less talent. It's about being relentless and finding ways to improve every day," he added.
So, will the Sabres break their playoff drought and make a run for the Stanley Cup? Only time will tell, but with Kekalainen at the helm, they're certainly taking the right steps towards achieving their goals.
