The Troubling Rise of Traditionalism Among Gen Z Men
A recent study has revealed a startling trend among Gen Z men, with 31% expressing agreement that a wife should 'always obey her husband.' This finding, published by IPSOS, a Paris-based research firm, is particularly concerning as it coincides with International Women's Day, a global celebration of women's achievements and a call for gender equality.
What's more, this regressive attitude is not an isolated sentiment. The study, which surveyed over 23,000 adults across 29 countries, found that Gen Z men consistently held more traditional views on gender roles compared to older generations. For instance, 57% of Gen Z men agreed that women's equality has gone too far, and 59% felt that men are expected to do too much to support equality. These numbers are significantly higher than those of Baby Boomer men, who showed more progressive attitudes.
Personally, I find this trend deeply troubling. It suggests a potential backlash against the hard-fought gains of the feminist movement. In my opinion, what we're seeing here is a reactionary response to the progress made in gender equality, especially among younger men who may feel threatened by changing societal norms.
One thing that immediately stands out is the influence of the 'manosphere,' a term for online spaces that promote male supremacy and traditional gender roles. With figureheads like Andrew Tate, who openly espouses misogynistic views, it's no surprise that some young men are embracing these regressive ideologies. The manosphere offers a distorted sense of empowerment, appealing to those who feel left behind or disenfranchised by modern society.
The study also highlights an interesting paradox. While Gen Z men want traditional gender roles for women, they also hold themselves to traditional standards of masculinity. They believe in being physically tough and emotionally self-reliant, reflecting a rigid and outdated view of masculinity. This internalization of traditional gender norms is a cause for concern, as it can lead to harmful behaviors and attitudes.
What many people don't realize is that these attitudes are not just a Western phenomenon. The study shows that countries with historically strict gender roles, like Thailand, Brazil, and India, had higher percentages of men agreeing with traditional gender norms. This indicates a global trend that transcends cultural boundaries, suggesting a broader backlash against gender equality.
In my analysis, this study is a wake-up call. It reveals a growing disconnect between generations and a disturbing trend of young men embracing traditionalism. As we celebrate International Women's Day, we must also acknowledge the work that remains to ensure true gender equality. This includes addressing the root causes of these regressive attitudes and promoting education and dialogue to challenge harmful gender stereotypes.
