A former Olympic swimmer and now a Baroness, Sharron Davies, is taking a stand against a speeding ticket, claiming that the motorway signs were at fault. This story has sparked controversy and left many wondering about the validity of her argument.
Davies, a 63-year-old former athlete, was caught by a speed camera on the M4 while driving back from a speaking engagement in Wales. The court papers reveal that she was driving her Mini at 65mph, exceeding the temporary speed limit of 50mph. Despite this, she intends to fight the charge, stating that she was unaware of the reduced speed limit due to inadequate signage.
"I am shocked to receive this ticket, and I believe the signage was so poor that it was easy to overlook. I am certain this is what happened," she wrote in her defense.
Avon and Somerset Police initiated the prosecution after her car triggered the speed camera near junction 19 in South Gloucestershire last October. Davies explained that she was traveling alone and had been using her cruise control and the Waze app to navigate the varying speed limits in Wales, particularly around Newport.
"The signage was unclear, and I did not see any indication that the speed limit had dropped to 50mph from 70mph on the motorway. I was doing 67mph, well within what I believed was the 70mph limit. There was very light traffic, and no road workers present. I wonder if the timing of road works at night could have contributed to the confusion?" she questioned.
Davies emphasized that she would have reduced her speed if she had been aware of the lower limit. She added that in her 45 years of driving, she had never contested a speeding fine before, but this time, she felt the need to stand up for what she believed was an unfair situation.
"I am a good and safe driver, and I take pride in that. I am adamant that the signage was inadequate, and that is why I received this ticket."
A successful swimmer, TV pundit, and now a Baroness, Davies has achieved much in her career. She was nominated for a life peerage by Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch and has a long list of accomplishments, including two Commonwealth Games gold medals and over 200 British records in swimming.
Her trial for the speeding charge is set for August 11 at Bath Magistrates' Court. This case raises questions about the responsibility of drivers and the clarity of road signage. What do you think?
