Nabers' post, which he later deleted, was a direct response to the Giants' questionable decisions during a critical moment. He questioned the play-calling, especially when the Giants were leading 27-24. He pointed out specific instances where the team seemed to make choices that would lead to a loss, such as passing instead of running to burn timeouts, and not attempting a field goal. "Football common sense!!!! Am I missing something?" he wrote, highlighting his confusion.
But here's where it gets controversial... The specific sequence Nabers referenced put interim head coach Mike Kafka under the microscope. With the Giants at the Lions' 2-yard line with 3:11 remaining, Kafka's decisions were heavily scrutinized. A pass play fell incomplete, stopping the clock. On third down, a run resulted in a loss of 4 yards. Then, on fourth down from the 6-yard line, Kafka chose to go for it instead of attempting a field goal, defying conventional wisdom. The pass attempt failed, and the Lions took over.
From there, the Lions managed to drive into field goal range, tying the game with a 59-yard field goal, and ultimately winning in overtime.
And this is the part most people miss... Had Kafka made different play-calling decisions, the Giants could have secured a win in regulation. However, the idea that Kafka was deliberately trying to lose is a complex one. As an interim head coach, Kafka is essentially auditioning for the full-time role. A win against the Lions would have significantly boosted his chances.
