Charlotte Light Rail Stabbing: Suspect Charged with Attempted Murder (2026)

Bold headline: A stabbing on Charlotte’s light rail draws new charges just months after a deadly attack on the same transit line. But here’s where the story gets more complicated and more debated...

In Charlotte, North Carolina, police say a suspect has been charged in the Friday stabbing incident aboard a light rail train.

Oscar Solarzano, 33, faces five counts, including attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon causing serious injury, and carrying a concealed weapon, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

The male victim was found with a stab wound near North Brevard Street and East 22nd Street, where the train seemed to have halted between stations, as reported by WSOC, the local ABC affiliate.

Emergency responders transported the victim to Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center; he remains in stable condition after initial serious injuries.

Police say Solarzano was quickly taken into custody following the stabbing and was brought to the division for interrogation by detectives. After questioning, he was handed over to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security identified Solarzano as a Honduran national who had previously been removed from the U.S. twice and was in the country illegally. The official noted that Solarzano received a final removal order in 2018 and was deported during the Trump administration; he reportedly crossed the border again in 2021 and was removed a second time, with a third illegal entry occurring at an unspecified date and place.

The stabbing follows a separate fatal attack on a Ukrainian refugee aboard the Blue Line of Charlotte’s light rail several months earlier. The suspect in that case, Decarlos Brown Jr., 34, is charged with first-degree murder and faces federal counts connected to violence against a railroad carrier and a mass transportation system resulting in death.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the latest stabbing to contact Charlotte Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600, use the P3 Tips app, or visit the Crime Stoppers website. Public tips can be shared anonymously.
