Bihar Assembly Elections: A Historic Day Unfolds
A Landmark Moment in Bihar's Political Journey
As the sun rose on November 11, 2025, Bihar witnessed the final phase of its Assembly elections, a pivotal moment in the state's democratic process. With a record-breaking voter turnout in the first phase, the stage was set for an intense and closely watched second round.
The Numbers Speak Volumes
In the initial phase, an unprecedented 64.66% of voters cast their ballots, the highest ever recorded in Bihar's history. This surge in participation has left political analysts and observers intrigued, especially considering the deletion of 69 lakh voters from the list following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
A Battle for Regions
The final phase encompasses critical Assembly constituencies spread across Magadh, Mithilanchal, Seemanchal, Shahabad, and Tirhut regions. Of the 122 constituencies, 101 are general, 19 are reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC), and two for Scheduled Tribes (ST). Notably, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) had a less-than-stellar performance in the previous election, winning only eight out of 48 constituencies in the Magadh and Shahabad regions.
A Diverse Electorate
The voting demographics are intriguing. More than half of the electorate, a staggering 2.28 crore, falls between the ages of 30 and 60. In contrast, only 7.69 lakh voters are in the 18-19 age group, highlighting the diverse age spectrum of Bihar's voters. Additionally, the total number of women voters in these 122 constituencies stands at 1.75 crore, a significant and influential segment of the electorate.
Prominent Candidates and Their Fates
The second phase features some high-profile candidates. Bijendra Prasad Yadav, a veteran JD(U) leader and the most senior member of the State Cabinet, aims for an unprecedented eighth term from his Supaul seat. Similarly, Prem Kumar, a Cabinet colleague from the BJP, seeks his eighth consecutive win from Gaya Town, a remarkable feat.
Other Ministers with their electoral fates on the line include Renu Devi (Bettiah) and Neeraj Kumar Singh 'Bablu' (Chhatapur) from the BJP, and Leshi Singh (Dhamdaha), Sheela Mandal (Phulparas), and Zama Khan (Chainpur) from the JD(U).
In the Katihar district, Mehboob Alam and Shakeel Ahmed Khan, legislative party leaders of CPI(ML) Liberation and the Congress, respectively, aim for a hat-trick of wins from the Balrampur and Kadwa Assembly seats.
A Test for Minor NDA Partners
The second and final phase is also a critical test of strength for minor NDA partners, the Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) led by Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, and the Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) headed by Rajya Sabha MP Upendra Kushwaha. Both parties have been allotted six seats each, and all six HAM seats are up for grabs in this phase.
The RLM, a relatively new party with no representation in the State legislature, fields some interesting candidates. Mr. Kushwaha's wife, Snehlata, and his trusted aide, Madhaw Anand, make their electoral debuts from Sasaram and Madhubani, respectively.
A Call for Change or Continuity?
As the voting commenced, prominent figures made their appeals. Janata Dal (United) leader Umesh Singh Kushwaha urged voters to give momentum to the Nitish Kumar-led 'double-engine' government, promising justice and development. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra emphasized the need for jobs, education, health, and industry, calling for the protection of democracy and the Constitution.
Independent MP Pappu Yadav from Purnea predicted a 'big change' in Bihar, questioning the Prime Minister's language and appealing for votes based on the issues facing the state. Bihar Minister Shravan Kumar echoed the sentiment, urging voters to support the NDA to secure their children's future.
A Historic Victory for the NDA?
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) exuded confidence, claiming that the NDA was headed for a historic victory in Bihar. Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad highlighted the NDA's track record of development and contrasted it with the legacy of corruption and misgovernance associated with Tejashwi Yadav. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar urged voters to turn out in large numbers, setting their sights on a new voting record.
A Day of Decisions
With 1,302 candidates in the fray, including several Ministers, the second phase of the Bihar Assembly elections is a crucial juncture. The results will shape the political landscape of the state for the coming years. As the polls closed at 5 p.m., the nation awaited the verdict of the people of Bihar, a verdict that will define the future of one of India's most populous and politically significant states.
