ABC Radio's FM Transition: A New Chapter for Perth Listeners
The ABC's Perth radio stations are making a significant shift from AM to FM, marking the end of an era for the iconic Hamersley transmitter. This move is not just a technical change but a pivotal moment in the history of Perth's radio landscape.
For Trevor Kelly, a veteran radio technician, this transition brings back memories. He started his career in 1959, climbing the very mast in Hamersley that soon will no longer be the primary broadcast site for ABC Radio Perth. The transmitter, built in 1932, was a landmark in the northern suburbs, but now it's time for a new chapter.
The transition to FM is more than just a change in frequency. It's about reaching more people and ensuring a clearer, more reliable signal. James Cridland, a radio futurologist, highlights the importance of this move, especially for emergency broadcasting. He notes that FM is the primary medium for emergency broadcasts, and this transition ensures that the ABC remains a reliable source of information during critical times.
Perth is leading the way in Australia, becoming the first capital city to move all stations to FM. This shift aligns with global trends, as many countries are moving away from AM. In Europe, major broadcasters have already left the AM band, and Japan is set to follow suit. In the US, the transition to FM is underway, driven by the need to improve car listening experiences.
The move to FM will significantly enhance listening in cars, a crucial audience for radio. New electric cars no longer include AM receivers, and even hybrid cars are being phased out. This change is driven by the fact that AM is not a standard feature in most European and UK cars, making FM the preferred choice for in-car entertainment.
BAI Communications area manager Tim Gray is overseeing the transition, preparing an FM mast at Bickley in the Perth Hills. The project involves upgrading the antenna and combiner systems to handle the new frequencies. While it's an exciting development, Gray acknowledges a sentimental attachment to the Hamersley site, which has been a significant part of Perth's broadcasting history.
Despite the emotional connection, the transition is necessary. NewsRadio, which must broadcast parliament on AM, will continue simulcasting on both bands until the law is amended. Cridland emphasizes the practicality of FM in cities, where a smaller transmitter can cover a broader area. He argues that the ABC should prioritize FM in all capital cities for better signal reception in cars and homes.
The new frequencies for ABC Radio Perth, Radio National, and ABC NewsRadio will be 102.5 FM, 103.3 FM, and 104.1 FM, respectively, starting from February 23. This transition is a significant step forward, ensuring that ABC Radio remains accessible and relevant in the digital age.
